What is Headless Horse?

Headless Horse is a full service creative studio based in Edinburgh, with two full-time staff designers who collaborate with accomplished artisans, digital connoisseurs, and brand consultants. The agency’s clients include Nike, Rolls-Royce, Yves Saint Laurent, Travis Scott, Kanye West, Forbes, Louis Vuitton, Harley-Davidson, alongside other pop stars and high-profile brands.

Why did they choose Readymag as an online website editor?

The Managing Director of Headless Horse—who calls himself Horseman M.—started with a CMS platform, but wanted to update the studio website with case studies more regularly. “They all vary so much from style to format, length and service,” he explains. “I wanted each of the pages to be different but live on one central website. That requires a solution that can house anything from single image projects to full visual identities. I also wanted to overlay website elements to have smaller pieces moving around the screen, so I needed a way to convey my ideas seamlessly, instead of asking a developer to code them. Readymag was a natural fit.”

Now, all our case studies have their own Readymag page, accessible from an iframe on our main portfolio page. We call it the ‘Investigation wall’ because it looks like the type of crime studies you see in a detective office or spy movie. Trying to piece together all of the evidence, we wanted people to feel like they were the first to discover our work and uncover the mystery of the organisation and our projects.— Horseman M.

How do they use Readymag in their work?

Horsemen, as they call themselves, have built product landing pages, launch pages, brand invitations, booking forms, brand guidelines and presentations. “Readymag allows us to have unique content on each page and make concept layouts in-house, very quickly,” staff designer Horseman Nyeste says.

Our PDF’s weren’t keeping up and Readymag presented a lot of advantages over more traditional formats: call outs for more information, interactive elements for showcasing works in progress and even typeface testers for branding projects.— Horseman M.

Favorite client project

Headless Horse was approached by computer company Renderboxes to redesign their branding and website for the release of a new line of computer systems. “We built them a full experience, featuring a 3D model that would open up and display the inner workings of the computer as the user scrolled—something that would’ve been difficult to produce with code. They’ve since moved to a larger site thanks to the success of our brand iteration; Suffering from Success, as DJ Khaled puts it,” says Horseman M.

Favorite Readymag features:

I am a big fan of Readymag animations, we use them all the time in our brand documents. It helps make them a bit more than just a flat PDF!

Secondly, we really like having our own subdomains—so that when documents are sent, they have our branding instead of a hosted link or a lengthy Google/Dropbox URL.

Finally, their new type interface is a big deal: being able to go in and select individual glyphs makes it perfect for our branding work.
